The year started with a social media rave around the #10yearchallenge. Basically, this involves juxtaposing a picture from 10 years back with a more current picture of you. From the pool of pictures I found on Instagram, some changes were so obvious, while others not too obvious. Point is, you’re not the same person you were 10 years ago.

Some people don’t like change- I’m one of those people 🤭 That’s because it comes with some life altering decisions, some uncomfortable shifts from the known and some adventure into the unknown. Change can be good or bad, however, change remains constant.

I lost the few digital pictures I had from 10 years back, so I couldn’t really get on the bandwagon. But I still recall where I was 10 years ago. I had just finished my secondary school and had applied for college. A lot of decisions were taken that year— all which worked together to make me who I am today. Choice of school, choice of course, choice of friends in college, choice of relationship status, choice to even venture into the unknown… all of these made me who I am.

No doubt then, choices and decisions contribute greatly in effecting change in our lives. Not deciding to choose is choosing in itself. We may not even choose to change intentionally, but oftentimes the minor and major decisions we make, lead to change one way or the other.

For change to look good on you, you need to be deliberate about making better choices. It won’t be easy, and if you’re an overthinker like me, making a decision will always be tough. But we need to make decisions and stick with them.

Remember, change will happen either way, so it’s best we steer the wheel of change in the way that we want it to be through our choices.

Haha, it just occurred to me that this applies to the Nigerian elections as well. We have to make better choices to effect the kind of changes we want.

Take a stock of your life and see the choices you made which got you to where you are. We can’t change the past, but we sure can learn from it. What choices will you make this year to achieve the kinda change you desire?

Please feel free to share your thoughts on the subject. I’d like to learn more!

  1. Yikes, I’m not sure I’d want to compare myself to 10 years ago. It’s an interesting one though, and I love how you’ve phrased it about how change will happen anyway so it’s better that we steer the direction – it’s hugely empowering to view it that way! Thought-provoking post 🙂

  2. I love this this post and the concept of the “10 year challenge”! It’s so true that we all change as we grow and learn and it’s so important for us to make good choices so the “change looks good on us”! It’s kind of funny to think about…ten years ago I wasn’t even in Jr. High School yet – so I’ve definitely changed a lot in the last ten years, lol! And only God knows where I’ll be in the next ten years! Keep up the good posts Mfon – so glad I stopped by!😃
