Did You Know---

There are some people you meet in life and just know that you’re gonna do all you can to fight for them to remain a part of your life. One of such people is my soul sister. I call her that because her soul is almost an exact reflection of mine.  On the outside we’re quite an unlikely pair, with her being quite extroverted and me being more introverted. The beauty about our friendship is that it transcends distance and time and she adds so much value to my life. Well,  what’s with the plenty intro M?  Lol. I’m sorry I got a little carried away. Turns out she sent me this mail trail a coupla days back and it was dated a year ago. We were addressing the issue of sex before marriage and one key thing she said that popped out for me was the why. She questioned my decisions and went further to give me reasons for hers.

Growing up in a Christian home made me quite oblivious to the world outside. To ‘worsen’the case,  I went to Christian schools for the most part of life. So imagine my shock when I discovered not everyone believes in what I do. Even Christians find certain things I thought were normal, pretty ridiculous. From my few years on earth,  it’s clear that no matter how big and safe the bubble you are cradled in is,  one day it will break.  You will be thrown to the outside world,  you will meet people different from you. Most importantly, everything you’ve ever known will be questioned.  

So before we get to that point, you need to ask yourself the why’s. Why do you believe in what you believe in?  Why do you think it’s bad to do A? Why do you do what you do?  Why do you stand for what you stand for?  Truth is, if you have no personal reasons/convictions for your beliefs, values, choices etc,  you will easily compromise when someone presents a compelling argument. Take some time this week to question the things that are the very core of your existence,  question all you know and give yourself convincing answers. Because sooner rather than later,  you will be tested,  you will be tried,  you’ll be questioned – why do you do what you do?

    It’s good advice. We need to know why we believe what we do. One of the epistles gives similar advice, that we should always be ready to “give an account” for what we believe. In the process we may discover that we’ve been badly taught and that the Bible may not actually teach certain things we took as a given. Anyone for “Eternal Conscious Torment”?

  3. That’s a good lesson, and one we try to teach the students at my youth group. We can’t rely on someone else to carry our faith. It has to be ours. We must spend time in prayer and Bible study to develop a relationship with Jesus and establish our beliefs

  7. Our daily encounters, challenges whether good or bad in life has its unique way of tempering with out belief system. Circumstances that ain’t suitable for may come your path 👣 and one may tend to compromise. Many have indulged in acts they never envisaged and they say the circumstances calls for it. The bible wasn’t specific on certain issues and why we shouldn’t do them but our own individual spirit has a way to make us take life guiding decisions, majority of those where when we were still young teens. Someone said”don’t give yourself a life principle when you have not been faced with familiar circumstances “. It will depend on how true you’re with yourself. No one can tell 👄👂 you to do this cause they’ll paint it good from their side. We know what is good and bad no matter how we try to see it.
    The scripture tells us ” Therefore do not throw away your conference . Which has a great reward. HEB. 10:35.
    Hold on to your belief,confidence which will bring to your path great reward. Hold ✋ on if deep inside you’re convinced it is the best.

  8. Awesome post Mfon – so introspective! And as a former homeschooler raised in a small Christian co-op and classes, I can totally relate! I went through a period during freshman year of high school where I started questioning tons of things, as I learned more about the world at large. Thankfully, I feel I’ve stabilized at this point, but it was hard for a while. Nonetheless, I would definitely encourage people to think about what they believe and why, as that influences so many of our life choices and our worldview.

    Agree with you absolutely. I’d add that we need to have built a close relationship with God also, becos whilst people can argue against your beliefs, they can’t argue against or question your personal experience.
