There are certain things we know as true but still find it hard to accept. One of such is death. Everyone knows death is inevitable but still, it doesn’t cushion the blow when it happens.  Just recently I saw two pictures of young chaps who had passed on and it sent my mind reeling. I always thought I was at peace with death…but can one really be? 

Solomon was right when he said:

It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of everyone; the living should take this to heart. –Ecc 7:2

There are some lessons I have gained about death. First is that death is an equalizer. The grave doesn’t care what title you held or how much you had. The same maggots that feed on a poor man would feed on the rich. Death levels up the class structures and stereotypical discrimination.

Secondly, death is no respecter of persons. It snatches the unborn, the young and the old. Anyone can die. It’s not limited to one’s age.  Every now and then we need the jolts of reality to keep us in check.

I don’t think the scariest part of death is in dying, I think it’s the life afterwards.

For lo, death is but a portal to a life after; a life spent either rejoicing at the feast of the King or crying tears which can never quench the fires of Hell. I think almost everyone would opt for pleasure and not pain. But still, a lot end up in an eternity of pain.

A second chance is not when you die and come back again to earth. For me, a second chance is when you read something like this and pause to get things right with God; repenting, not because you will die immediately but so you’ll be ready when you do.

Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. -Heb 9:27-28

I know this isn’t one of those cheerful posts that gear you up for the week ahead, but I would like to believe this is one that gears you for the life after death. Jesus has paid the bills for an eternity with the Father. Accepting His work on the cross and living right before God is necessary in getting ready for the inevitable -death.
